The main components of an electromechanical testing system from Instron are:
Test frame with integrated controller

Load cell mounted on the crosshead
Gripping tools for tensile tests or compression platens suitable for compression tests.
A computer system approved by Instron with Instron Bluehill software.
Special gripping tools are available for specific applications such as bending and peel tests.
For strain measurement, strain gauges can be attached to the specimen.
For specimens where this is not possible, non-contact strain transducers can be used.

The system primarily communicates through the controller.
The controller is equipped with cards for signal conditioning of the measurement transducers (so-called signal amplifiers), exchanging data between the measurement transducer and the computer.
Furthermore, the controller also exchanges commands and data with the test frame via a test frame interface card (FIB) in the test frame.
The FIB is responsible for connecting all electrical components of the test frame.

Hardware Control Elements

The hardware control elements are:
Emergency stop button - to immediately stop the crosshead in case of an unsafe condition.
Travel limit stops - these must be set before each test to protect the operator from unexpected movements of the crosshead.
Control console - allows performing certain functions of the test frame instead of through the computer.
This includes, among other things, starting and stopping a test as well as the manual controls for positioning the crosshead to clamp a specimen.

Software

The control of the testing system is done via the Bluehill software from Instron.
This software allows for the setting of test parameters, operation of the system, data acquisition, and data evaluation.
