The machine is designed for automatic operation. The hazardous areas are secured by a light curtain.

The system is used to capture the visual surface condition of laminated silicon-based solar panels after various phases of physical stress.
The generated image data exclusively ensures the viewing of image material for documentation purposes.
Furthermore, the software allows for a comfortable visual comparison of two corresponding image sections
(same geometric position) from different points in time during the test series.

The panel to be examined is placed by the machine operator onto a support rail system and precisely aligned at the stops.
The design of this support is such that parallel, movable rails and a foldable front stop ensure
that the recordings of the sample guarantee high repeat accuracy and thus comparability.

The camera positioning for the recordings is handled by a cross table.
The system consists of a control-linked axis system made up of two opposing linear axes.
These move a portal along the longitudinal axis of the panel to be tested.
The portal has, orthogonal to this gantry system and along the transverse axis of the specimen,
another linear drive with the attached optical recording unit.

The complete control of the system, excluding the safety devices, is managed by a PC.
This PC provides the operator with an intuitive graphical interface based on the operating system "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
.
The PC and thus the entire system are operated from a regular laboratory workstation in close proximity to the testing system.

To activate the actuators, it is necessary to switch on the control voltage of the machine.
This is done via buttons on the loading side of the system. During operation, machine operators
and passersby are protected from injuries caused by moving components by a surrounding light curtain.
A disruption of the invisible IR light beam results in an emergency stop of the drive elements.
The same effect is achieved by pressing the attached emergency stop mushroom button.
