The Zener barrier prevents the transmission of excessively high energy from the non-Ex area to the Ex area.
The Zener diodes contained in the Zener barrier are connected in reverse direction.
The breakdown voltage of the diodes is not exceeded during normal operation.
If this voltage is exceeded due to a fault in the non-Ex area, the diodes begin to conduct, triggering the fuse.
The Zener barrier has alternating polarity, meaning the Zener diodes are connected against each other and one side is grounded.
The Zener barrier can be used for both DC and AC voltage signals.
Depending on the application, increased or decreased intrinsic safety parameters result from series or parallel connections.
