Carbon Determination C230

The LECO C230 carbon analyzer is a microprocessor-based,
software-controlled instrument for measuring the carbon and
sulfur content in metals, ores, ceramics, and other
inorganic materials. The C230 uses an induction furnace
and measures carbon through infrared absorption.
The infrared source (IR) consists of nichrome wire, which is heated
to 8500 °C by resistance heating. The IR source
emits visible energy as well as all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum.
Carbon dioxide can be used for description; the same principle applies to sulfur detection.
Carbon dioxide absorbs IR energy at a specific wavelength
within the IR spectrum. Energy from the IR source is absorbed
when the gas flows through the cell, thus preventing it from reaching the IR detector.
An IR cell is used both as a reference and for measurement.
Total carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is continuously and simultaneously captured.
The initial reference level or baseline for the detector is
established by passing oxygen through the cell to purge any remaining atmospheric gases.
